Day 5

Subject: [firstname]: Your followers make you a better leader

Hey [firstname]!

It's true: Your followers make you a better leader. I know that sounds counter-intuitive, but bear with me. This all ties into what we were discussing the other day about being a “people person” if you want to be an inspirational leader.

You see…

By understanding people, inspirational leaders are better equipped to help THEM be successful. So put subordinates in places that will foster professional growth and help them achieve their career goals. When people succeed in their careers and enjoy the jobs they are doing, everybody benefits in turn.

I'm sure you've seen this in your own life. When you're doing something you enjoy, when you're getting a lot out of it and feel like you “own” it, you'll happily go the extra mile. Yet when you're doing something that feels like a chore, when you hate what you're doing and you're only doing it because somebody has said you HAVE to do it (or else) you're going to put in the minimal amount of effort necessary to complete the task. That will be the reflected in the quality of the resulting work.

The best leaders ask and explain. They don't tell people what to do “because I said so”. Instead, they become a coach and advocate – getting the job done and helping others grow and succeed, too. The most inspiring leaders also give praise and credit. They acknowledge the efforts others have made and show gratitude.

It's a win-win situation for everybody.
